Moving Freely Again: Tackling Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis with Confidence

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the leading causes of joint pain and reduced mobility worldwide, particularly affecting the hip and knee—two joints we rely on daily for walking, bending, climbing, and generally staying active. At PROmotion Health, we understand how frustrating it can be when every step feels stiff or painful. But there’s good news: with the right guidance and support, you can take control of your symptoms and feel confident in your movement again.

Understanding Osteoarthritis of the Hip and Knee

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition marked by the breakdown of cartilage—the protective tissue that cushions your joints. Over time, this leads to inflammation, stiffness, pain, and reduced joint function. Though commonly associated with ageing, OA is influenced by many factors, including previous joint injuries, genetics, obesity, and lifestyle habits.

When it comes to the hip and knee, OA can manifest in several ways:

· Hip OA often presents as deep ache in the groin or thigh, reduced hip rotation, and difficulty with everyday tasks like putting on shoes.

· Knee OA may cause joint swelling, grinding sensations, and pain during weight-bearing activities such as climbing stairs or walking long distances.

Importantly, OA isn’t a life sentence of immobility. Research shows that conservative management—including education, exercise, and weight control—can significantly reduce pain and improve function.

Enter GLA:D®: Good Life with osteoArthritis from Denmark

Developed in Denmark, the GLA:D® program is an internationally recognised, evidence-based initiative aimed at helping individuals with hip and knee OA manage their condition without surgery. It’s designed to empower participants to understand their pain, regain confidence in movement, and build strength through tailored neuromuscular exercises.

At PROmotion Health, we’re proud to offer our Hip and Knee OA program with all clinicians certified in GLA:D®

Here’s what to expect from our GLA:D® service:

Supervised Exercise Program

Over a 6–8 week period, participants can engage in group-based exercise classes run by GLA:D® trained exercise physiologists. While the recommended schedule is twice-weekly sessions, many patients choose to attend once a week over a longer timeframe. Each session— is tailored to your level of ability and focuses on building strength, improving control, and enhancing functional movement.

Outcome Tracking

We use validated outcome measures to track your progress in pain, function, and quality of life—giving you tangible proof that the work you’re putting in is making a difference.

Why GLA:D® Works

GLA:D® is not about pushing through pain—it’s about retraining your body to move better and more confidently. The exercises focus on proper movement patterns, balance, and strength, helping you to support your joints and reduce stress on them.

Participants in GLA:D® consistently report:

· Less pain

· Better mobility

· Improved quality of life

· Higher confidence in managing symptoms

Better yet, the program is backed by global data showing a reduction in the need for surgery in many cases.
